After Sokal Hoax: On Science, Left and Truth

Abstract

Post-modern thinkers developed hostility to modern science on the basis that modern sciencehas been used as a tool in the hands of mighty Western societies and white males in order to overwhelm oppressed groups. Through a mischievous way and using post-modern discourse and arguments, Alan Sokal showed that the basic assumption of the opponents of modern science is wrong. While Sokal with the help of hisfamous "prank" defends the truth and the reliability of the science, he charges the opponents of modern science with damaging left wing politics although they define themselves leftists. He claims that the left must insist on science and truth. In this study, I am on the side that Sokal holds againstthe opponents of modern science and also defend the argument that critiques against modern scienceindeedmust be directed to those who control the scientific production process, the fundersandto those who make science an ideological weapon and a means of domination.

Post-modern düşünürler, modern bilimin, güçlü Batılı toplumların ve beyaz erkeklerin zayıf toplumları ezmekte bir araç olarak kullanmasına karşı çıkıştan, modern bilim düşmanlığı türetmişlerdir. Alan Sokal, modern bilim karşıtlarına, temel varsayımlarının yanlış olduğunu, post-modern dili ve argümanları kullanarak muzip bir yolla göstermiştir. Sokal meşhur "şakasıyla" bilimin güvenilirliğini ve gerçekliğini savunurken, kendilerini siyaseten solda tarif eden bu modern bilim karşıtlarını, sola zarar vermekle suçlamaktadır. Solun, bilim ve gerçeklikte ısrar etmesi gerektiğini söylemektedir. Bu çalışmada, Sokal'ın bilim karşıtlarına karşı mücadelesi desteklenmekte ve modern bilime yöneltilen eleştirilerin aslında bilimsel üretim sürecini kontrol edenlere, fon sağlayıcılara ve bilimi fiziksel bir silaha ve ideolojik bir baskı aracına dönüştürenlere yöneltilmesi gerektiği iddia edilmektedir
