Abstract

This study can be considered as criticism of two basic approaches that have marked the social sciences tradition of Turkey which are class conflict and cultural conflict approaches. Both approaches have a reductionist attidute to social reality. However, social reality is multi dimensional. Both the concepts culture and classare not unrelated substantive categories: especially in countries such as Turkey, having a strong state tradition. The state stands as a central force in the formation of the social-class structure, in the construction and execution of the production and distribution regime. This situation has triggered a split between the esteemed/legitimate culture that recognized by the state in Turkey and the subordinate culture with . The hierarchy established between cultural structures renders some communities more disadvantaged in theirclass reproduction. The disadvantage of the subordinate culture reproduce the profound classification of communities. The social groups participating in the legitimate culture recognized by the state have a number of advantages such as self-reliance, an esteemed social position, a defacto status, easier staffing in the state sector, and protection in the private sector and increase of visibility in the media. This means that class reality ought not be understood only by economic capital. Therefore, in order to understand the social reality of Turkey, it would bebetter to adopt a relational approach treating capital in not onlyeconomic but also in cultural context.
