Where to Align Turkish Literature? The National Canon of Nihal Atsız

Abstract

This study aims to locate the place of Nihal Atsiz’s work Türk Edebiyatı Tarihi both in the debates on the national canon and in his world of thought. The canon is supposed to compound the human community affected by it around the common values. Whilst the works on the history of literature and the debates on literature during the period the work of Nihal Atsiz was published enable the context in the intellectual production process to turn out to be seen, attitudes to the common values present the route map of the ideological pathways of authors. Particularly in Nihal Atsız’s vantage point, history and literature intersect each other on the national hero, and this national hero is the embodied appearance of epic and monumental moments representing the spirit of the nation. While literature is to undertake the responsibility to unveil the national hero, the latter, by building a historical totality, is to be beneficial to forming a political future toward the ideological horizon of Atsız.

Özet

Bu çalışma, Nihal Atsız’ın Türk Edebiyatı Tarihinin hem milli kanon tartışmalarındaki hem yazarın düşünce dünyasındaki yerini tespit etmeyi amaçlar. Kanon, hitap ettiği insan topluluğunu ortak değerler etrafında birleştirmeyi hedefler ve bu maksatla bir araya getirilen eserlerin tümünü ifade eder. Eserin yayınlandığı dönemdeki edebiyat tarihi çalışmaları ve edebiyat tartışmaları, entelektüel üretim sürecindeki bağlamı görmeye olanak tanırken ortak değerlere ilişkin yargılar, yazarların ideolojik patikalarının yol haritasını sunar. Nihal Atsız özelinde tarih ile edebiyat, milli kahramanda kesişir ve milli kahraman, milletin ruhunu yansıtan destansı ve anıtsal anların tecessüm etmiş halidir. Edebiyat, milli kahramanı gösterme işlevini üstlenirken milli kahraman, tarihsel bir bütünlük yaratıp Atsız’ın ideolojik hattı doğrultusunda politik bir geleceğin şekillenmesine yarar.
