Abstract

By focusing on the Lukács-Brecht debate, this study will examine the discussions of visual/ concrete poetry which appeared during the 2000’s of Turkish poetry. Controversy betweenLukács and Brecht is still holds its importance for today since first of all that it can beconsidered as a starting point for a proper understanding of the relation between totality- fragmentary production of art. In other words, controversy between two thinker can be linkedto the nature of postmodern rejection to organic totality of art in sake of the experimentaland fragmentary fashion. While Brecht had tried to transcend the traditional theatre -and artin general- by adopting a technique suitable with the scientific age, against him Lukács hademphasised the relation of technique and scientific fetishism with capitalist reification. Fromthis it can be defined two distinct line which lies until 2000’s discussions of visual poetry andpostmodernism. In the first line there is Brecht who consider theatre as a laboratory which cantranscend the traditional way alongside Benjamin who were optimist for disappearing of aurain art and replacement of it with scientific reproduction. As I will show that the visual poetrystands in this line by adopting completely new form of scientific poetry which is purified fromthe traditional one. Contrary to this, there is another line starts from Lukács who defends thetraditional fashion which keeps the organic, emotional and ethical totality between art work andthe audience alongside Jameson who maintains Lukács’ analysis of reification in his critiqueof postmodernism. In conclusion I will show that the Lukács -Jameson line can provide usefulframework to criticize the technical fetishism of the visual poetry.
