Mitoepigenetics and its Role in Neurodegenerative Diseases

Abstract
Mitoepigenetic is epigenetic mechanisms that occur within the mitochondrial organelle. Mitoepigenetic regulations are mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) methylation / hydroxymethylation, mitochondrial nucleoid modifications, mitochondrial RNA (mtRNA) modifications, and modulation of non-coding RNAs (ncRNA) originating from nuclear DNA (nDNA) and mtDNA. Mitoepigenetic changes are thought to affect mitochondrial dysfunction and underlie many diseases. Here, the effects of mitoepigenetic changes on certain neurodegenerative diseases are reviewed in the light of available information.
Özet
Mitoepigenetik, mitokondri organeli içerisinde meydana gelen epigenetik mekanizmalardır. Mitoepigenetik düzenlemeler; mitokondriyal DNA (mtDNA) metilasyonu/hidroksimetilasyonu, mitokondriyal nükleoid modifikasyonları, mitokondriyal RNA (mtRNA) modifikasyonları ve nükleer DNA’dan (nDNA) ve mtDNA’dan köken alan kodlanmayan RNA’ların (ncRNA) modülasyonları olarak sınıflandırılmaktadır. Mitoepigenetik değişikliklerin, mitokondriyal disfonksiyona etki ettiği ve birçok hastalığa zemin oluşturduğu düşünülmektedir. Burada, mitoepigenetik değişikliklerin belirli nörodejeneratif hastalıklar üzerindeki etkileri mevcut bilgiler ışığında derlenmiştir.
