Abstract

Aim: This study was conducted to determine the relationship between life satisfaction and depression in university students. Methods: The population of this cross-sectional study consisted of 5889 students studying at the Faculties of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Theology, Architecture and Education of Gaziantep University. The sample of the study was reached to 1180 students by cluster sampling method. Data were collected between March and April 2018 and ‘Personal Information Form’ and ‘Beck Depression Scale’ and ‘Satisfaction with Life Scale’ were used as data collection tools. The data obtained were evaluated in SPSS 20.0 statistical package program. Frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test in independent groups, ANOVA and correlation tests were used for data analysis. Ethical committee, institutional permission and verbal consent of the students were obtained in order to conduct the research. Results: It was found that 20.5% of the students had ≥ 17 BDI scores; the mean GDS score was 13.55 ± 3.77, and the mean BDI score was 11.99 ± 7.22. A high correlation and negative correlation were found between life satisfaction and depression levels. There was a statistically significant relationship between BDI and GIS mean scores of students according to their family income and post-graduation job anxiety (p
