The Formation of the Protestant Armenian Nation in Anatolia

Abstract

The main topic of this article is Protestantism and the main reasons for the spread of Protestantism among Armenians in Anatolia. This article also focuses on the importance of missionary activities. Moreover, it tackles the attitude of the Armenian Church towards the Armenians who became Protestant as a result of missionary activities, and also the pressures of USA and England on the Ottoman Empire because of this attitude. The acceptance of the Protestant Armenians by the Ottomans as a “Nation” is discussed and in the end an overall evaluation on the issue is offered

Özet

Makalemizde, Protestanlık hakkında genel bilgiler verilmiş, Protestanlığın Anadolu‟daki Ermeniler arasında oluşum sebepleri de belirtilerek nasıl yayıldığı ve bu yayılış sürecinde misyonerlik faaliyetlerinin etkisi ele alınmıştır. Bununla birlikte misyonerlik faaliyetleri neticesinde Protestanlaşan Ermenilere karşı Ermeni Patrikliği‟nin tutumu ve bu tutum karşısında İngiltere ve Amerika‟nın Osmanlı Devleti‟ne karşı baskısı da işlenmiştir. Burada ayrıca Protestanlığı kendisine din olarak seçen Ermenilerin Osmanlı Devletince ayrı bir “Millet” olarak kabulü anlatılmıştır. Makalemizin sonuç kısmında ise genel bir değerlendirme yapılmıştır
