Abstract

A Text on the Socio-Cultural Ground of Tobacco in the 18th Century Ottoman Land: Abū Sahl Numān Efendi’s Epistle Taḥlīl al-Duḫān Abū Sahl Numān Efendi is a significant Ottoman historian of the 18th century. His epistle on tobacco, Taḥlīl al-Duḫān, provoked much discussion in its time and the composition of many epistles for and against it. It’s a text of social history bearing significant traces of its time. When compared to other epistles on religious legitimacy of tobacco, Taḥlīl al-Duḫān has a content that goes beyond them. It contains interesting additional remarks reflecting Numān Efendi’s personal experience about various points such as the reception of tobacco in Anatolia and the kinds of tobacco preferred there. This article offers a textual examination of the aforesaid epistle on tobacco, and an analysis of its content. It also gives information about mān Efendi’s life, the historical journey of tobacco in Europe and the Ottoman land, and the contents of other epistles on tobacco in the Ottoman geography. Included finally in the study is also the transliteration of the text originally composed in Ottoman Turkish

Özet

Ebū Sehl Numān Efendi, 18. yüzyılda yaşamış önemli bir Osmanlı tarihçisidir. Yaşadığı dönemde çokça tartışılan, lehte ve aleyhte pek çok risâlenin yazıldığı tütün konusunda kaleme aldığı risâle kendi döneminden izler taşıyan bir sosyal tarih metni niteliğindedir. Genellikle tütünün dinî ve şer ī hükmünün mevzu bahis edildiği diğer risâlelerle kıyaslandığında Numān Efendi’nin risâlesi bunu aşan bir muhtevaya sahiptir. Risâlede tütünün ilgili dönemde Anadolu coğrafyasında nasıl karşılık bulduğuna, hangi tütünlerin tercihe şayan olduğuna dair Numān Efendi’nin şahsi tecrübelerine dayanan anlamlı tespitler yer almaktadır. Biz bu makalede onun tütün hakkındaki bu risâlesini inceledik, muhtevasını analiz ettik ve Osmanlı Türkçesiyle kaleme alınmış metnin transkripsiyonunu yaptık. Ayrıca Numān Efendi’nin hayatına ve tütünün Avrupa ve Osmanlı’daki tarihsel seyrine yer vererek Osmanlı coğrafyasında tütün konusunda yazılan diğer risalelerin muhtevasını ana hatlarıyla sunduk
