Unknown Uses of "Mul" in Classical Turkish Poetry

Abstract

Most ofthe words and concepts used in classical Turkishpoetryhavewidemeaninglayersandrich connotations. Classical poets attributed new meanings to the words they used in their poems, taking into account the coherence among the other words they used in thepoem. This situation has become indispensable in the tradition in terms of bringing depth and richness of meaning to poetry and making a difference to poetry. In this article, the use of the word “mul”, known only as “wine” today is discussed with the meanings of “flower” and “medicine”. In the study, firstly, dictionaries were examined and the meaning (s) of the word “mul” was determined. Later in the article, the examples of the word “mul” given the meaning of “wine” in the poems are discussed; afterwards, examples of the other mentioned uses of the word “mul” were examined, based on the details of meaning given other than “wine” in dictionaries such as “-Burhân-ı Katı, Mo’în and Steingass-”. Thus, all the layers of meaning that can be detected in the classical poetry texts of “mul” are dealt with in order and explained through sample couplets.

Özet

Klasik Türk şiirinde kullanılan kelime ve kavramların çoğu, geniş anlam katmanlarına ve zengin çağrışımlara sahiptir. Klasik şairler, şiirlerinde kullandıkları kelimelere, şiirde yer verdikleri diğer kelimeler arasındaki insicamı da göz önünde tutarak yeni anlamlar yüklemişlerdir. Bu durum; şiire anlam derinliği ve zenginlik, şaire ise farklılık kazandırması açısından gelenek içerisinde kaçınılmaz olmuştur. Bu makalede, günümüzde yalnızca “şarap” anlamıyla bilinen “mül”ün, “çiçek” ve “ilaç” anlamlarıyla da kullanılması ele alınmıştır. Çalışmada öncelikle çeşitli sözlükler incelenerek “mül” kelimesinin hangi anlam(lar)da yer aldığı tespit edilmiştir. Daha sonra “mül” için verilen “şarap” anlamına değinilmiş, sonrasında ise “-Burhân-ı Katı, Mo’în ve Steingass-” gibi sözlüklerde “şarap” dışında verilen anlam detaylarından hareketle “mül”ün sözü edilen diğer kullanımlarının yer aldığı örnekler incelenmiştir. Böylece “mül”ün klasik şiir metinlerinde tespit edilebilen bütün anlam katmanları sırasıyla ele alınıp örnek beyitler üzerinden değerlendirilmeye çalışılmıştır.
