The Laokoon Mention in Lessing's Philosophy of Art

Abstract

This paper, Gotthold Ephraim Lessing's Laokoon oder Über die Grenzen der Malerei und Poesie (Laokoon or On the Limits of Paintings and Poetry) and analyses the independence of the branches of art and within that independence, examines the specific principles of those branches in question. The aim of the paper is to emphasize that there were a series of principles about creating a work of art and literature in the 18th century, and that only through these principles can one define independent works of art. Within an historical framework, the paper shall provide hints on the philosophy and the sense of art in the given era firstly by including the predecessors of the claims presented in Laokoon. Deriving from the examples in this work, a study that examines the significance and indispensability of principles and limits (which define the independence of the works of art) in preventing complications exemplified as "Poetic Painting" or "Painting Poetry" shall follow it. Finally, this paper will be concluded with a claim concerning with that using an abstract and ideational technic at plastic arts.

Bu çalışma, Gotthold Ephraim Lessing'in 1766 senesinde kaleme aldığı Laokoon oder Über die Grenzen der Malerei und Poesie (Laokoon ya da Resim ve Şiirin Sınırları Üzerine) adlı eseri üzerinden sanat dallarının özerkliğini ve bu özerklik içerisinde onların kendilerine özgü yasalarını incelemektedir. Makalenin amacı, 18. yüzyılda edebiyat ve sanat eserlerinin yaratılmasında onların sınırlarını belirleyen bir takım kurallar olduğu ve bu kurallar sayesinde ancak bağımsız sanat eserlerinden söz edilebileceğini vurgulamaktır. Çalışma, düşünce seyri açısından tarihsel bir izlek üzerinde önce Laokoon eserinde öne sürülen iddiaların kendinden önceki temsilcilerine yer vererek dönemin düşünce dünyasına ve sanat anlayışına dair bazı ipuçları sunacaktır. Bunu, eserdeki örneklerden hareketle sanat dallarının özgünlüğünü belirleyen sınırların ve kuralların, resimsel şiir yahut şiirsel resim gibi karmaşaların önüne geçilmesinde ne denli önemli ve vazgeçilmez olduğuna yönelik bir çalışma izleyecektir. Son olarak makale, plastik sanatlarda soyut-düşünsel bir teknik kullanılmamasına dair bir iddia ile sonuçlanacaktır.
