STRUCTURE AND STYLE IN DÜRRENMATT'S CRIME NOVEL SUSPICION

Abstract

Since the emergence of the rst samples of detective novels in the 19th century, it can be observed that themes of these novels were adapted from the daily life and social sphere. Since they are consumed in a short time and the authors do not generally pursue a literal concern, detective novels have been considered as a part of trivial literature. Since the reader's active participation in the novel, particularly in the chase throughout the novel, and bringing the culprit to justice eventually give a distinct pleasure to the readers- an experience that they might not nd in other genres-, detective novels are still popular in the 21st century. Friedrich Dürrenmatt, an important litterateur and playwright, also wrote detective novels due to nancial concerns. Thanks to his detective novels, Dürrenmatt overstepped the template features of the genre and brought a new breath to it. In this study, Dürrenmatt's detective novel, Suspicion (1951) is examined in two parts. In the rst part, Suspicion is analysed in detail according to the ctional features of classical crime narratives, and the points overlapping with those features or different from them are highlighted and discussed. In the following part, the novel is analysed according to the elements that determine the style of literary texts. This study argues that Dürrenmatt's detective novel differs from the ctional features of classical crime narratives through an analysis of its stylistic features, and that his novels are not likely to be evaluated under trivial literature.

İlk örnekleri 19. yüzyılda görülen polisiye romanların ortaya çıkışıyla birlikte günlükhayattan gerçeklerin ve toplumsal olayların polisiye romanlarda işlendiği görülmektedir.Polisiye romanlar hızlı tüketilmeleri ve genelde yazarlarının edebî kaygı gütmeyişi gibisebeplerle yığın edebiyatı altında değerlendirilmiştir. Böyle olsa da okurun polisiyeromandaki aktif katılımı, başından sonuna içinde yer aldığı kovalamaca ve sonundasuçlunun adalete teslim edilmesi, okura belki de diğer romanlarda bulamadığı bir okumazevki verdiğinden, polisiye romanların popülerliği 21. Yüzyılda bile devam etmektedir.Önemli bir edebiyatçı ve oyun yazarı olan Friedrich Dürrenmatt da maddi kaygılarnedeniyle polisiye roman yazmıştır. Dürrenmatt, yazdığı polisiyelerle türün şablonözelliklerinin sınırlarını aşmış ve türe yeni bir soluk getirmiştir. Polisiyelerinde kullandığıüslup da eserlerinin yığın edebiyatı altında yer alan polisiye romanlardan farklılaşmasınısağlamıştır. Bu çalışmada, Dürrenmatt'ın “Şüphe” (1951) adlı polisiye romanı ikiaşamada incelenmiştir. Birinci inceleme aşamasında söz konusu roman, klâsik polisiyeanlatıların kurgusal özelliklerine göre incelenmiş ve bu özelliklerle örtüşen ya da onlardanayrılan yerleri gösterilmiştir. İkinci aşamada ise roman edebî metinlerde üslububelirleyen unsurlara göre ele alınmıştır. Sonuçta Dürrenmatt'ın “Şüphe” adlı polisiyeromanının klâsik polisiye anlatıların kurgusal özelliklerinden farklılaştığı ve taşıdığıüslup özellikleriyle yığın edebiyatı altında değerlendirilemeyeceği gösterilmeyeçalışılmıştır.
