Abstract
Mecnûn, who stands out in divan poetry as the king of lovers, has undoubtedly gained that reputation because he was a lover who had “arrived to the truth from metaphor.” In masnavis of Leylâ vü Mecnûn, poets describe Mecnûn as “a perfect one,” who completed his seyr-i sulûk. Seyr-i sulûk is an internal/ sufistic journey and refers to reaching the level of perfection by passing through the layers of the soul. Some researchers view that seyr-i sulûk is considered sometimes in accordance with “process of individuation” of Jung, founder of analytical psychology. Joseph Campbell has systematized the process of individuation, which is utilized in the context of the cycle of heroes in narrative works, as the “core of the monomyth.” The fact that it is similar to seyr-i sulûk in terms of the stages of separation/maturation/return and it meets the concepts of road/passenger/travel leads to the idea that seyr-i sulûk, the process of individuation, and the core of the monomyth are different names of the same processes. This article will seek to answer the question of whether or not Mecnûn, as a perfect hero who completed his journey, is a “sacred” hero who completed the process of individuation and the core of the monomyth.
