Abstract

Two moderate earthquakes, Ml=5.4 and 5.2, with focal depths of 7 km and 10 km took place on the Salhançayı fault extending between Amasya and Çorum, north-central Türkiye, at 04:55 a.m. and 06:00 a.m. (local time) on 14 August 1996. Since the first shock did not cause so damage and all people were outside after this shock, nobody was killed and injured by these earthquakes. No foreshock occurred before the main shoocks. More than 790 aftershocks with magnitudes ranging from 1.8 to 4.0 were recorded in the days between August 14,1996 and October 10,1996. S-P time differences of the aftershocks recorded in Çatak station, which is 40 km far from the epicenter, range from 6 second to 4.5 second in the following days after occurrence time of main shock. This indicates that the rupture propagated from the east to the west. One earthquake with magnitude 4.1 happened at 05:27 between two main shocks. Fault plane solutions of both main shocks have showed that the fault has a character of right lateral strike-slip faults. As of 28 August 1996, Salhançayı earthquake caused 460 heavily, 409 moderately and 970 slightly damaged houses in the villages of Amasya and 246 heavily, 303 moderately and 706 slightly damaged houses in the villages of Çorum. The 5-10 km part of the 35-40 km Salhançayı fault, which is right lateral strike-slip fault moved in these earthquakes. This part extends between Çaybaşı (Amasya) and Karasar (Çorum) villages. No surface cracks was observed on the ground. However, the quakes caused many rock falls, which are composed of huge Jurassic-Cretaceous limestones and Eocene conglomerates blocks, along the Salhançayı river having very steep valley between Çaybaşı and Pekmezci villages. These blocks blocked and dammed the course of the river. Epicenters of these two earthquakes were located in a region between Çaybaşı and Pekmezci where the fault makes step to the right. This step has developed a small pull-apart basin in the vicinity of Çaybası village. The fault changes its strike from D-B to SW near KarasaK village and continues to the another pull-apart basin called Düvenci. As a result, it is estimated that the main rupture occured in this region between the fault step and the fault bend. Distribution of rock falls and heavily damaged houses, S-P time differences and information on wave propagation from villagers have showed that the main rupture propagated from the step to the east to the fault bend to the west. Consequently this indicates that the initiation and termination points of the main rupture were controlled by geometrical features of the region. Ground motion record of the first main shock (MI=5.2) nearest to the epicenter, which is 26 km far from it, was obtained at Merzifon station belonging to Strong Ground Motion Network of ERD. Peak ground accelerations at Dinar Station were 0.022 g in the north-south direction, 0.0595 g in the east-west direction and 0.005 g in the vertical direction; duration of strong shaking was around 7 sec. Maximum intensity for these earthquakes has assigned as VI (MSK) on the basis of damage distributions and rock falls.
