Effect of thyroxine suppressive therapy on thyroid nodules and serum lipid profile

Abstract

L-thyroxine suppressive therapy for euthyroid nodular goiter is still a treatment of choice. Many conceptions have been reported about efficacy of this therapy on thyroid nodule size. Moreover, we could not encounter any study, related with thyroxin suppressive therapy and serum lipoproteins. In this prospective study, 20 euthyroid nodular goiter patients given thyroxine suppressive therapy were followed for changes in thyroid nodule size and serum lipids for 18 months. At the end of the study; thyroid nodule size and serum lipid levels did not show any significant change before and after suppressive therapy (p>0.05). In conclusion, thyroxine suppressive therapy did not cause any significant change in thyroid nodule size and serum lipid levels in our patients.

Özet

Ötiroid nodüler guatr'ın medikal tedavisinde L-tiroksin kullanımı yaygın olarak uygulanan bir yöntemdir. Bu tedavinin nodül boyutlarına etkisi konusunda değişik görüşler bildirilmiştir. Ayrıca, L-tiroksin tedavisinin serum lipoproteinleri üzerine etkisiyle ilgili literatür taramalarında çalışmaya rastlanılmamıştır. Bu çalışmada L-tiroksin verilerek TSH süpresyonu yapılan, ötiroid nodüler guatr'ı olan 20 hasta prospektif olarak 18 ay izlendi. Hastalar tedavi öncesi ile tedavi sonrası, nodül boyutları, serum lipid düzeyleri ve beden kitle indekslerinde değişiklikler bakımından incelendiler. Tiroid nodülleri ultrasonografik ölçümlerle belirlendi. Çalışma sonucunda, nodül boyutları ve serum lipoprotein düzeylerinde tedavi öncesine göre önemli bir değişikliğin olmadığı görüldü (p>0.05).
