Abstract

PURPOSE: Tobacco and cigarette smoking contains carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, nitrogen oxide and tar. These harmful components may damage balance of oxidants/antioxidants and these processes cause oxidative damages on lipids and lipoproteins in cells and tissues. Oxidative damages may cause destruction of cellular membranes and insufficiency in physiological functions of the all cells. And also, plasma lipid profile and some liver enzymes in plasma may be effected by oxidative damage. Vitamins C and E are two natural antioxidants and they may prevent the oxidation of lipids. METHOD: The groups of tobacco and cigarette smoking were received orally vitamins C (500 mg/day) and E (100 mg/day) during 20 days. In all samples, the levels of triglycéride (TG), cholesterol (CHOL), high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) were determined by colorimetrically method and the activities of aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were determined by UV-enzymatically method. RESULTS and CONCLUSION: The levels of TG, AST, ALT and LDH were statistically higher in the groups of tobacco and cigarette smoking. These biochemical parameters was decreased by administration of vitamins C and E in the same groups. Therefore, it could be concluded that vitamins C and E effected especially the concentration of plasma triglycéride. In addition, they may effect the values of ALT, AST and LDH.
