Abstract
PURPOSE: The incidence of sexually transmitted diseases is increasing in our country and in the world. The frequency and spectrum of sexually transmitted diseases among soldiers who were admitted to the dermatology outpatient clinic in the Turkish .Republic of Northern Cyprus were investigated in this study. METHODS: In the period of February-May 2000, 925 soldiers who were admitted consecutively to the dermatology outpatient clinic of Girne Military Hospital of Northern Cyprus Turkish Peace Forces were assessed for sexually transmitted diseases by a complete dermatological examination. The diagnosis of scabies, condylomata acuminata, molluscum contagiosum and herpes genitalis were made by clinical findings. The diagnoses were confirmed by VDRL and TPHA for syphilis and by gram staining for gonorrhea in addition to clinical findings. Anamnestic findings, diagnoses and marital status of patients with sexually transmitted disease were recorded to a form. The recordings of the outpatient clinic were used in the calculation of the number and the mean age of all cases included the study. On the other hand, the information in the patient form was utilized in the evaluation of the number and distribution of the cases who were diagnosed as having sexually transmitted diseases. RESULTS: Sexually transmitted diseases were diagnosed in 60 soldiers. Of those, 34 had scabies (56.7%), 12 had condylomata acuminata (20%), 7 had molluscum contagiosum (11.7%), 3 had herpes genitalis (5%), 3 had syphilis (5%), and 1 had gonorrhea (1.7%). CONCLUSION: Among soldiers who were admitted to the dermatology outpatient clinic, the frequency of sexually transmitted diseases was found to be 6.5%. Scabies was the most frequently encountered disease, followed by condylomata acuminata and molluscum contagiosum in our study.
