Abstract

Background: Problem Based Learning (PBL) is a way of teaching which puts students at the center. Students’ attitudes towards the education method used are important in terms of the content of education prepared by educators and learning outcomes. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine nursing students’ attitudes towards problem based learning. Methods: This is a descriptive study and included 256 students studying at Nursing School of Dokuz Eylül University between 2006 and 2007. Data were collected with a socio-demographics form and Problem Based Learning Attitude Scale, developed by Selçuk et al. It is a five-point Likert scale and is composed of 41 items. Obtained data were analyzed with one-way variance analysis. Results: We found that most of the students liked to share their knowledge through PBL, students’ communicative discussion skills, feeling responsible for their own learning, inquiry skills and individual study skills improved and that the students became more aware of why they do what they do and had increased self-confidence. More that half of the students reported that PBL took a lot of time, put pressure on students and caused an overloaded learning program. The fourth years student’s had higher scores positive attitudes towards problem based learning and the difference between them was found to be statistically significant. Conclusion: Increased positive attitudes towards PBL paralleling with increased school years show that the nursing students adopted this education model and that the model had a positive influence on students’ attitudes. The results of this study will shed light on nursing curricula based on PBL and help to increase students’ positive attitudes and to provide solutions for students’ negative attitudes towards the model
