The effects of cooperative learning on 4th grade students academic achievement in Science and Technology course

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine the effects of cooperative learning on academic achievement towards Science and Technology course. The sample of this study consisted of 131 fourth grade students in two primary schools in the center district, in Aydın. Four classes were assigned as research groups. One of the experimental groups and one of the control groups were instructed by researcher and the others were instructed by their own teachers. The data was collected by achievement test. The experiment groups learned science using the cooperative learning method and the control groups took the activities that take part in the primary school s science and technology curriculum. Data collection tool was administered to the groups as a pre-test, post-test and retention test. The results showed that cooperative learning has a positive effect on achievement about science and technology course.

Özet

Bu araştırmanın amacı kubaşık öğrenmenin ilköğretim dördüncü sınıf öğrencilerinin fen ve teknoloji dersine ilişkin akademik başarılarına etkisini sınamaktır. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu Aydın ili merkez ilçede bulunan iki devlet ilköğretim okulunda okuyan 131 dördüncü sınıf öğrencisi oluşturmuştur. İki deney iki kontrol grubunun bulunduğu araştırmada bir deney ve bir kontrol grubunda dersler araştırmacı tarafından, diğer gruplarda ise araştırmacının hazırladığı ders planları doğrultusunda sınıf öğretmenleri tarafından işlenmiştir. Deney gruplarında dersin öğretiminde kubaşık öğrenme tekniklerinden birisi olan küme araştırması tekniği ile kubaşık öğrenme etkinlikleri kullanılmıştır. Kontrol gruplarında ise 2006 ilköğretim programında öngörülen etkinlikler gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırmaya ilişkin veriler başarı testi ile toplanmıştır. Öntest-Sontest-Kalıcılık Testi ile elde edilen veriler üzerinde kovaryans analizi gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırma bulguları, kubaşık öğrenme yönteminin öğrencilerin akademik başarıları üzerinde olumlu etkisinin olduğunu ortaya koymuştur.
