Abstract

Many individuals whose names are mentioned in Islamic History have been criticized from different perspectives due to the events that occurred in their times either in the works written by historians who are their own contemporaries or in the works of the advisors who lived after them. In the time called “Vizier Period” in Fatimids, which was a Shia state that ruled in North Africa, Egypt and Syria between the years of 209-566/909-1171, Efdal b. Bedr al-Cemâlî , the second vizier of the Armenian origin of Fâtimîs, and the one who came after his father Bedr el-Cemâlî, was exposed to criticism of both the Sunni world and the Shia communities due to the events that happened in his period. There are two incidents that have mostly been criticized about Efdal b. Bedr el-Cemali, which also draws attention due to his Armenian origin and the ambiguity of his religious understanding. One of the most criticized points of Efdal b. Bedr elCemâlî is that he saw the Westerners, who started to advance in Muslim lands with the start of the Crusades, as an auxiliary force against the Seljuks and took attitudes towards this understanding. As a result of this attitude, Efdal was criticized for acting in favor of the Crusaders. With his policy, Efdal b. Bedr el-Cemâlî sought ways to meet the Crusaders and Byzantines, who considered the Turks as enemies, on a common ground. The point which Efdal is criticized in the Shiite world is that instead of his eldest son Nizar, who was appointed as heir by the Caliph Müstansır-Billâh, he appointed his younger son Ahmed, who Efdal can dominate easier, as a Caliph with the title of Musta‘lî-Billâh. As a result of this incident, Ismailiyyah, the official sect of the Fatimids was divided into two as Nizariye and Mustaliye. This division influenced the Sunni world as well as the Shiite world. Efdal b. Bedr el-Cemâlî, one of the most mentioned viziers in terms of his actions in Fatımids, changed the course of many important events in history as a result of the decisions he made during his term. While this study deals with the policy followed by Efdal b. Bedr el-Cemâlî during the First Crusades, it also reveals how the Nizarȋ-Müsta'li division was interpreted in the sources of the period and how these subjects were handled in contemporary research. The research was created in order to examine the reasons of the events that occurred in the course of history and to interpret the results by transferring the reflection of the mentioned events to the sources of the period in a neutral way.

Bedr’ül-Cemâlî’nin I. Haçlı Seferleri sırasında izlediği politikayı ele almakla birlikte aynı zamanda Nizarȋ-Müsta’lȋ bölünmesinin dönemin kaynaklarında yorumlanma şeklini ve çağdaş araştırmalarda söz konusu konuların nasıl işlendiğini ortaya koymaktadır. Araştırma bahsi geçen olayların dönemin kaynaklarına yansımasını aktararak tarihin akışı içerisinde meydana gelen olayların sebeplerini irdelemek ve sonuçlarını yorumlamak amacıyla oluşturulmuştur.
