Abstract
Theoretical and emprical formulations for proportioning concrete mixtures began to appear at the turn of the last century. Before then proportioning by arbitrary parts -usually stating the number of loose volumes of sand and gravel to one of cement - was the common practice. A brief outline of the historical development of the mix design procedures beginning with Ferefs work is presented. Most of the current methods provide tables or charts to estimate the quantities and relative proportions of the constituents to meet the specified requirements. It is interesting to see how much these procedures are influenced by the results of the early studies such as Abrams' w/.c ratio law and fineness modulus concept, Lyse's rule of constant water content and the $b/b-0$ concept by Talbot and Richart. Today, with the increased usage of mineral and chemical admixtures in concrete, mix design procedures have become more complicated.
