Abstract

The Prophylactic Effects of interferon and Vitamin E on Postoperative Peritoneal Adhesions (Experimental Study) Because of its complications postoperative peritoneal ad¬hesion is one of the most serious problems in current sur¬gery. The prophylactic effect of vitamin E and interferon on postoperative peritoneal adhesions in rats were investi¬gated in this study. Thirty female Wistar-Albino rats were used. Rats were separated into three groups of 10 rats. In the first group (control group) laparotomy is followed by a serosal incision of one centimeter on cecum, and a limit¬ed peritoneal with a partial muscular excision on anterior abdominal wall were performed. Consequent repairment of these defects were performed by seperated stitches. In the second group (vitamin E group) single intramuscular dose of 300 lUlkg vitamin E was administered 24 hours preoperatively, in the third group (interferon group) 500.000 lUlkg interferon is delivered intraperitoneally just before the abdominal closure in addition to proce¬dures in the first group. Although the severity of adhesion, fibrotic scoring and mean fibrotic index were significantly higher (p0.05). It is concluded that the prophylaxis with vitamin E and inter¬feron may decrease the severity of operation-induced peri¬toneal adhesions.
