The Impacts on Local Income and Employment of Universities: Application on Batman University

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of Batman University on economy of Batman in terms of direct, indirect and induced income and employment. For this purpose, local income and employment impacts are analyzed statistically and econometrically by using the data set obtained from surveys and official statistics belonging to the academic year of 2012-2013. Marginal propensity to consume which is critical factor in the determining of induced impact is determined by employing cointegration test and Vector Error Correction (VEC) model for the period of 1987-2012. According to the analysis results, the impacts on local income and employment of Batman University are positive, and induced total impact of University is greater than it s total direct and indirect impacts.
Özet
Bu çalışmanın amacı, Batman Üniversitesinin Batman ekonomisinin gelir ve istihdamı üzerindeki doğrudan, dolaylı ve uyarılmış ekonomik etkilerini belirlemektir. Bu amaçla yerel gelir ve istihdam etkileri 2012-2013 akademik yılına ait anket ve resmi istatistik verileri kullanılarak istatistiki ve ekonometrik açıdan analiz edilmektedir. Uyarılmış etkinin belirlenmesinde kritik faktör olan marjinal tüketim eğilimi, 1987-2012 dönemi için, eşbütünleşme testi ve Vektör Hata Düzeltme (VEC) modeli kullanılarak belirlenmektedir. Analiz sonuçlarına göre, Batman Üniversitesinin yerel gelir ve istihdam üzerindeki etkileri pozitif niteliktedir ve Üniversitenin toplam uyarılmış etkisi, toplam doğrudan ve dolaylı etkisinden daha yüksektir.
