Kâzım Nami Duru : A Crucial Name in the history of Turkish education.

Abstract

In the early Republican era the Turkish intellectuals had an in fluence on the education system that they pioneered structural changes. One of those intellectuals is Kâzım Nami Duru who gave direction to the history of Turkish education with his original ideas in the light of the experiences he gathered not only in the late Ottoman but also inthe Republican era. He worked as an officer, journalist, politician, author as well as a pedagogue that the latter ought to be made a special emphasis to. He did research on reasons of failure in foreign language learning and sugg ested some possible solutions to overcome that problem. On the other hand, particularly focusing on initial reading and writing instruction, he dealt with teaching Turkish language. He strictly criticized the education system based on memorization and put forth its negative sides for consideration. Thus this study aims to introduce the pedagogue who made serious contribution to the improvement of Turkish formal education institutions as well as the modernization of Turkish educational system with his sugges tions that have still found acceptance.

Cumhuriyet döneminin ilk yılları, aydınların eğitim sistemine hâkim oldukları bir dönemdir. Bu dönemde aydınlar görev aldıkları kademelerde yapısal değişikliklere önderlik etmi şlerdir. Bu aydınlardan biri olan ve eğitim tarihimize fikirleri ile yön veren Kâzım Nami Duru da birçok yeniliklere imza atmıştır. Kâzım Nami Duru, hem Osmanlı döneminde, hem de Türkiye Cumhuriyeti döneminde yaşamış ve birçok gelişmelere tanık olmuştur. Ülke yönetiminin çeşitli kademelerinde subay, gazeteci, siyasetçi, edebiyatçı, eğitimci olarak birçok görev almıştır. Ama her zaman eğitimcilik yönü daha ağır basmış ve eğitimin her kademesinde çeşitli hizmetlerde bulunmuştur. Yabancı dil eğitiminde başarı sız olunmasının nedenlerini araştırmış, çözüm yolları aramış, Türkçe öğretimi konusunda başta ilk okuma - yazma olmak üzere birçok çalışma yapmış ayrıca, ezberci eğitim sistemini eleştirerek bu yöntemin zararlarını ortaya koymuştur. Türk eğitim sisteminde fa rklı görevlerde bulunarak, örgün öğretim kurumlarının gelişmesine çok önemli katkılar sağlayan Kâzım Nami Duru, eğitim sisteminin çağdaşlaşması yönünde bugün bile geçerliliğini kaybetmeyen görüşler ortaya koymuştur.
