Impressions on Daily Life at Turkish Press from its Emergence to the Early Republican Period

Abstract

There is a parallel and spiral relationship between the birth and development of the Turkish press and the modernization of Turkish society. The press and modernization process, which began to penetrate Turkish society at about the same time, has experienced a slower development than those of the westones. Having sprouted and developed in the last century of the Ottoman State, the Turkish press continued its progress in the Early Republican Period, too. The Turkish press, which has survived two major crises such as the First World War and the War of Independence, naturally encountered censorship and power control from time to time. Although the Turkish press had short periods of freedom from its birth until 1940’s, it could not go out of existing power control in general. Turkish press, which may be considered as the product of the modernization process, also became one of the main actors in the development of daily life practice of modernization. In short, the press has become both the product of modernization and one of the most important factors in its progress and internalization in society life.

Özet

Türk basınının doğuşu ve gelişimi ile Türk toplumunun modernleşmesi arasında paralelve sarmal bir ilişki mevcuttur. Aşağı yukarı aynı zaman diliminde Türk toplumunanüfuz etmeye başlayan basın ve modernleşme süreci, batıdaki örneklerine nazaran,yavaş bir gelişme seyretmiştir. Osmanlı Devletinin son yüz yılında filiz verip gelişenbasın, Erken Cumhuriyet Döneminde de gelişimini sürdürmüştür. Birinci Dünya Savaşıve Kurtuluş Savaşı gibi iki büyük krizi atlatan Türk basını, doğal olarak, zaman zamansansürler ve iktidar denetimi ile karşılaşmıştır. Türk basını doğuşundan 1940’lı yıllarakadar kısa süreli özgürlük dönemleri yaşasa da, genel olarak mevcut iktidar denetimidışına çıkamamıştır.Modernleşme sürecinin ürünü olarak değerlendirebileceğimiz Türk basını, aynızamanda, modernleşmenin gündelik hayat pratiğinin gelişmesinin de baş aktörlerindenolmuştur. Kısacası basın hem modernleşmenin ürünü hem de onun gelişip toplumhayatında içselleşmesindeki en önemli faktörlerinden biri olmuştur
