Abstract
This study is an attempt to investigate and evaluate the impact of Imperial Edict of Gulhane 1839 on the Greek Press. Greece became an independent State by breaking off the Ottoman Empire in 1830. The Greeks made efforts until the beginning of the 20th century to realize the “Great Idea”, which means annexation of the Greek – speaking population that were beyond the borders of their own State to the Greek Kingdom. The sedition of Mehmed Ali Pasha, the Governor of Egypt, and the proclamation of the Imperial Edict coincided with the emergence of Greek nationalism and irredentism. The researches about the reactions of Greece to these reform attempts initiated by the Ottoman Empire are still in its infancy. This research aims to determine and evaluate the related articles published in the Greek press in this complicated period and add a new dimension to the subject
