Abstract

ÜÇÜNCÜ, Uğur, Enver Pasha in the Turkestan National Struggle according to the Newspaper ‘The Times’ (1921-1922), CTAD, Year 18, Issue 35 (Spring 2022), pp. 137-163. In the end of the First World War, The Committee of the Union and Progress, headed by Talat Pasha, resigned on October 8, 1918. Then, the Party of the Union and Progress made its last congress and dissolved itself. The top leaders of the Party, Enver Pasha, Cemal Pasha and Talat Pasha and Bedri Bey, Cemal Azmi Bey, Dr. Nazim Bey, Bahattin Şakir Bey departed the Ottoman State lands with a German submarine during the congress. Enver Pasha had long been in contact with the Bolshevik Russians. He came to Batum after Kütahya-Eskişehir Battles and wished to enter Anatolia. However, he decided not to enter Anatolia, because of the great victory in the Sakarya War. By the end of 1921, he went to Turkestan and was on the side of the Turks fighting against the Bolshevik Russians. The Turks under the leadership of Enver Pasha had gained important achievements against the Russians. But these achievements did not result in a definite victory. Finally, Enver Pasha was killed by the Red Troops in Beljuan district of Bokhara on August 4, 1922. This process was followed closely by the British, who was an enemy of Turkey and the Bolshevik Russians in those years. The Times newspaper, attracting attention with its circulation and historical experience, conveyed the process to the British public opinion with numerous news and articles. The Times revealed Enver Pasha’s struggle in Turkestan, its effects on the West as well as Russia and Turkey. The newspaper presented the life, goals and death of Enver Pasha to the British readers according to the politics of the British Government.In this study, the reasons of Enver Pasha’s struggle against the Bolshevik Russians, its process, his death and its effects are revealed, using the news, reviews and articles in the Times. ÜÇÜNCÜ, Uğur, “The Times” Gazetesine Göre Türkistan Millî Mücadelesi’nde Enver Paşa (1921-1922), CTAD, Yıl 18, Sayı 35 (Bahar 2022), s. 137-163. Birinci Dünya Savaşı’nın sonlarında Talat Paşa başkanlığındaki İttihat ve Terakki Hükûmeti, 8 Ekim 1918’de istifasını sunmuştur. Ardından İttihat Terakki Fırkası son kongresini yapmış ve kendini fesh etmiştir. Kongre sürerken Fırkanın ileri gelen liderlerinden Enver, Cemal ve Talat Paşalar ile Bedri, Cemal Azmi, Dr. Nazım, Bahattin Şakir Beyler bir Alman denizaltısıyla Osmanlı Devleti topraklarından ayrılmışlardır. Enver Paşa, uzun süre Rusya’da Bolşeviklerle temaslarda bulunmuştur. Kütahya-Eskişehir Muharebelerinin ardından Batum’a kadar gelmiş ve Anadolu’ya girmek istemiştir. Fakat Sakarya Savaşı’nda elde edilen büyük zaferden dolayı Anadolu’ya girmekten vazgeçmiştir. 1921 yılının sonlarında Türkistan’a giderek Bolşevik Ruslara karşı mücadele eden Türklerin safında yer almıştır. Enver Paşa liderliğindeki Türkler Ruslara karşı önemli başarılar kazanmıştır. Fakat bu başarılar kesin zaferle neticelenmemiştir. Nihayetinde Enver Paşa, 4 Ağustos 1922’de Buhara’nın Belcivan bölgesinde Kızıl Birlikler tarafından öldürülmüştür. Bu süreç, o yıllarda Türkiye’nin ve Bolşevik Rusların düşmanı olan İngilizler tarafından yakından takip edilmiştir. Tirajı ve tarihi tecrübesiyle dikkat çeken The Times gazetesi, süreci İngiliz kamuoyuna çok sayıda haber ve makaleler ile taşımıştır. Enver Paşa’nın Türkistan’daki mücadelesini, Rusya ve Türkiye açısından olduğu gibi Batı üzerindeki etkilerini de ortaya koymuştur. Enver Paşa’nın hayatını, hedeflerini ve ölümünü İngiltere Hükümetinin siyasetine göre İngiliz okurlarına ulaştırmıştır. Bu çalışmada, The Times gazetesindeki haberler, yorumlar ve makaleler kullanılarak Enver Paşa’nın Bolşevik Ruslara karşı mücadelesinin sebepleri, süreci, Paşa’nın ölümü ve etkileri ortaya konulmuştur.
