Abstract
ÖĞRETEN, Ceyhun, Turkish National Struggle in the American Press: May 19, 1919- April 23, 1920, CTAD, Year 18, Issue 35 (Spring 2022), pp. 165-204. In this study, the American press, reflecting the opinion of the American public, was scanned from the arrival of Mustafa Kemal Pasha in Samsun on May 19, 1919 until the opening of the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) on April 23, 1920. It has been tried to determine the perspective of the American press on the National Struggle, its approach to the developments, and the press-politics relationship. The examined newspapers were classified according to their political tendencies, provinces, their handling of the National Struggle and their circulation. In the study, mainstream newspapers such as The New York Times, The Evening World and Evening Star of New York and Washington DC states, which try to convey the information obtained from the news sources in Anatolia to their readers, were examined in the study. In addition, local newspapers with low circulation such as Norwich Bulletin and The Daily Ardmoreite, which draw attention with their effective news about the National Struggle, published in different states, were also included. Thus, it has been tried to determine whether the newspapers published in different states and with different political views have a common attitude towards the National Struggle, the times and perspectives of the press and politics to convey the developments experienced. The first contacts between the United States of America (USA) and the Ottoman Empire developed in the commercial field. These commercial relations became official after the Greek uprising. Since the end of the 19th century, the USA has engaged in missionary activities in order to get to know the Ottoman Empire closely and to ensure the continuity of the commercial infrastructure. Although the First World War caused the cessation of diplomatic and commercial relations between the two countries, the fact that the Wilson Principles were taken as a basis in the Armistice of Mudros brought America's interest in Anatolia back to the agenda. At the Paris Peace Conference, the American view was influential on issues such as the mandate status, which directly concerns the Ottoman lands, the occupation of Izmir, the Near East Problem, and the future of Istanbul. These developments attracted the attention of the American press, especially with the influence of the Armenian Lobby and the Greek Lobby, which had ambitions on the lands of the Ottoman Empire. The local resistances that took place in various parts of Anatolia against the occupation of the lands of the Ottoman Empire turned into the National Struggle movement under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Pasha. The American press and the public closely followed Mustafa Kemal Pasha, and the National Struggle movement.
Özet
ÖĞRETEN, Ceyhun, Amerikan Basınında Türk Millî Mücadelesi: 19 Mayıs 1919 - 23 Nisan 1920, CTAD, Yıl 18, Sayı 35 (Bahar 2022), s. 165-204. Bu çalışmada 19 Mayıs 1919 tarihinde Mustafa Kemal Paşa’nın Samsun’a çıkışından 23 Nisan 1920 tarihinde Türkiye Büyük Millet Meclisi’nin (TBMM) açılmasına kadar olan süreçte Amerikan kamuoyunun görüşünü yansıtan Amerikan basını taranmıştır. Amerikan basınının Millî Mücadele’ye bakış açısı, yaşanan gelişmelere yaklaşımı, basın-siyaset ilişkisi tespit edilmeye çalışılmıştır. İncelenen gazeteler, siyasi eğilimlerine, eyaletlerine, Millî Mücadele’yi ele alışlarına ve tirajlarına göre sınıflandırılmıştır. Çalışmada, Millî Mücadele hakkında Anadolu’daki haber kaynaklarından edinilen bilgileri okuyucularına aktarmaya çalışan tirajları değişken başta New York ve Washington DC eyaletlerinin The New York Times, The Evening World, Evening Star gibi ana akım gazeteler incelenmiştir.
