What are the cognitive skills to be gained in the Turkish Educational System?

Abstract

In this article the importance of standard setting in terms of students’ learning in the Turkish educational system was discussed. Based on the Turkish Pupil Monitoring System data set, score alignment and vertical articulation studies were carried out for the subcomponents of mathematics assessment. The results imply that the skills in the first two categories of the performance descriptions could be considered as the basic and below proficient in the numbers and geometry subcomponents. On the other hand, the skills in the first category seems to be basic in the measurement subcomponent. It is argued that the empirical findings based on item mappings in the Turkish Pupil Monitoring system could be considered as a foundation for the standard setting attempts in the Turkish educational system.

Özet

Bu makalede Türk eğitim sisteminde öğrencilerin kazanmaları gereken beceriler kapsamında standart belirleme çalışmalarının önemi tartışılmıştır. Öğrenci İzleme Sistemi (ÖİS) verileri doğrultusunda Matematik dersi Sayılar, Geometri ve Ölçme alt alanlarında puan sıralama (score alignment) ve dikey ifadelendirme (vertical articulation) çalışmaları gerçekleştirilmiştir. Elde edilen bulgular Sayılar ve Geometri alt alanlarında ilk iki düzeyin temel becerileri kapsadığını ima etmektedir. Ölçme alt alanında ise ilk düzeydeki becerilerin temel beceriler olduğu izlenimi edinilmiştir. ÖİS’te kullanılan madde haritalama (item mapping) yöntemi ile elde edilen bu ampirik bulguların Türk eğitim sisteminde standartları belirleme çalışmaları için temel oluşturabileceği düşünülmektedir.
