Özet

1759 yılında Şam ve Sayda eyaletinde meydana gelen depremler bölge ahalisi için uzun süredir karşılaşmadıkları felaketler zincirinin bir halkasıydı. Kıtlık, kuraklık, depremler hayat pahalılığı ve akabinde 1760 yılından sonra meydana gelen veba salgını bölgedeki Müslüman ve gayrimüslimlerin nazarında kendilerine gönderilen bir azap olarak algılanmıştır. 1759 yılında bir ay arayla meydana gelen iki büyük deprem pek çok köyün yok olmasına ve şehirlerdeki kamu binaları başta olmak üzere evlerin yıkılmasına neden olmuştu. Bu felaketleri yaşayanlar ise o günlerde eline aldıkları divitlerinin mürekkebini bu sefer deprem için sarf etmiştir. Deprem sonrası Osmanlı Devleti’nin yenileme çalışmaları dâhilindeki yazışmalar ve kayıtlar ile dönem tanıklarının izlenimleri bu çalışmanın çerçevesini oluşturmaktadır. Bu bağlamda hasarın boyutları ve halkın tepkileri Kudüs, Sayda ve Şam şehirlerine odaklanılarak tasvir edilmiştir.

Abstract

The earthquakes that occurred in Damascus and Sidon province in 1759were parts of serial disasters that the locals had not encountered for a longtime. Famine, drought, earthquakes, the rising cost of living, and the plagueepidemic in 1760 were perceived as a torment sent by God to the Muslimsand non-Muslims in the region. Two major earthquakes in 1759 led to thedestruction of many villages and the collapse of public buildings, especiallyin cities. The scholars of the period who witnessed these disasters devoted afew pages to the earthquakes in question. The testimonies of the witnessesof the period regarding the earthquake of 1759 as well as the followingrenovation efforts of the Ottoman Empire are the main subjects of thisstudy. The scale of the damage and the reactions of the people are depictedby focusing on Jerusalem, Damascus, and Sidon.
