Abstract

Background and Design. - The presentation and the clinical course of Brucellosis have com¬mon features like chills, fever, headache, malaise, diarrhea, myalgia, back pain, hepatosplenome-galy, arthritis with various other diseases. Also fal¬se positive Brucella agglutination test results have been reported in a number of diseases which are considered in the differential diagnosis.of Brucel¬losis. This study was designed to determine the frequency of false positive Brucella agglutination test among these diseases. Materials and Methods.- A total of 265 cases were tested for Brucella antibodies. The study group consisted of 25 cases of tuberculosis, 15 malaria, 15 typhoid fever, 25 lymphoma, 25 sar-coidosis, 60 collagen- vascular disease and 100 with fever of unknown origin. In 100 patients tu¬be agglutination, in 115 slide agglutination and in 50 both tests were performed. Results. - Agglutination was detected only in 2 patients, one with malaria and the other with typ¬hoid fever with dilutions 1/20 and 1/40 respecti¬vely. Conclusion. - No increased frequency of false positive Brucella agglutination test was demonst-. rated among the disease groups tested.
