Abstract

Gastroenteritis is one of the most important causes of mortality and morbidity in children who are younger than 5 years of age. It is reported that 4-5 million children die of diarrhea and its complications every year. We have evaluated 54 patients who admitted to the hospital over the past year with gastroenteritis with special attention to the clinical and laboratory features. The age of the patients ranged between 2 months and 11 years with a mean of 23.2 months (SD±21.2 months). Diarrhea was the most common feature at the time of presentation. Clinical dehydration was detected in 31 patients. The type of dehydration in the majority of the patients (n:27; 88%) was isonatremic; a trend which was similar to that in other developing countries. Most patients were admitted during fall and winter (n:40, 75%) suggesting viral etiology. The majority of the patients below one year of age were not breast-fed at all or breast-fed for only 1 month or less (n:18; 60%) (p

Olguların % 75'i (40 olgu) sonbahar-kış aylarında yatırıldı. Bu, viral etyolojiyi destekliyordu. 1 yaş altındaki 30 olgunun büyük kısmının anne sütü almadığı veya 1 aydan az süre aldığı gözlendi (n:18; % 60)(p
