Abstract
In the last quarter of XIX century, although gymnastic lesson was given in some military schools and Galatasaray Sultani school, sport had not been known as a science discipline. Sport was considered to be simple movements based on the power and strength. However, Selim Sırrı Bey sent to Sweden to receive sports education in Sweden, there Selim Sırrı Bey understood that sport is a specific science discipline. Selim Sırrı after returning to the country by serving in the Ministry of Education has made action on this issue. Physical Education Deparmant in Gazi Education Institute founded in the Mustafa Kemal ATATÜRK period. The Gazi Physical Education Department was contributed to the development of Turkish education system, development of social and cultural life, domestic and international relationship of Gazi Physical Education Department and physical education how accepted as a branch of science and the studies for the development of this science.
Özet
XIX. yüzyılın son çeyreğinde Osmanlı Devleti’nde bazı askerî okullarla Galatasaray Sultanisi’nde “jimnastik” dersleri okutulmaktaysa da sporun bir bilim dalı olduğu pek bilinmiyordu. Spor, güç ve kuvvete dayanan basit hareketler olarak kabul ediliyordu. Ancak spor eğitimi alması için İsveç’e gönderilen Selim Sırrı Bey (Tarcan) burada sporun bir bilim dalı olduğunu idrak etti. Yurda döndükten sonra Maarif Nezareti’nde görev alarak bu konuyla ilgili faaliyetler yaptı. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk döneminde beden eğitimi konusunda çeşitli çalışmalar yapıldı ve Gazi Terbiye Enstitüsü bünyesinde “Beden Terbiyesi Bölümü” açıldı. Gazi Beden Eğitimi Bölümünün Cumhuriyet’in eğitim sistemine, sosyal ve kültürel hayatına, yurt içi ve yurt dışı bağlantıları ile beden eğitiminin bir bilim dalı olarak kabul edilip bu bilimin geliştirilmesine çok büyük katkıları oldu.
