Abstract

Trichomonas gallinae is a protozoan parasite that infects pigeons. With Crop milk, it is transmitted from adult pigeons to young pigeons. According to the virulence of Trichomonas gallinae, it causes serious deaths in young birds. The material of the study consists of a total of 450 domestic pigeons, 178 females, 122 males and 150 offspring from shelters of hobby pigeon breeding in Van. Pigeons were examined for Trichomonas gallinae according to age and sex. Swabs from pigeons mouth, pharynx and concha spread on the slide. After fixation of the preparations with methylalcohol, they were stained with giemsa stain and examined 100X objective under microscope. When the findings were evaluated, 97 (54.49%) of 178 female pigeons, 53 (43.44%) of 122 male pigeons and 102 (68%) of 150 pigeons were infected with Trichomonas gallinae. The overall infection rate of male, female and juvenil pigeons was 56%. This is the first study in which Trichomonas gallinae was detected microscopically in the province of Van.
