Abstract
Historically, the Sufis' understanding of worship and some of their haal (temporary state of consciousness, generally understood to be the product of a Sufi's spiritual practices) and behaviors have been criticized, especially their understanding of tawhid (unification or oneness of God). In this sense, among the ones who directed effective criticism to the Sufi, the names Ali b Muḥammad Abu'l-Farash b alJawzi, Ibn Taymiyyah, and Abu Ishaq al-Shatibi should be mentioned. These authors criticized the Sufis by bringing up many issues in their works. However, not all of their criticisms about Sufis are covered in this article. This article will be limited to the criticisms of these three authors and their discussion about the Sufis going into trance, fainting, and losing their lives due to listening (sama in Arabic) to the Qur'an. The effect of the Qur'an recitation on human beings is an undeniable fact. The manifestations of this effect differ from person to person. Ibn al-Jawzi, Ibn Taymiyyah, and al-Shatibi, who did not object to crying and trembling while listening to the Qur'an and accepted these haals/states to be in accordance with the Sunnah and the Qur'an, assessed the states such as going into trance, fainting, and losing one's life to be Bid‘ah (novelty, heretical doctrine). According to them, this kind of situation and haal, which was not seen in any of the Sahabi (companions of the Prophet Muhammad), is the result of the excessive understanding of worship and lack of knowledge.
