Comparison of spiral and conventional CT in the demonstration of urinary stones

Abstract

In order to compare spiral CT and conventional CT in the demonstration of urinary stones, we examined 41 patientswith both techniques. Spiral CT showed 36 small and 3 large renal stones that were not seen on conventional CT. The number of small re¬nal stones detected with spiral CT was significantly higher than that with conventional CT (p< 0.001). Conventional CT showed 5 small renal stones that were not visible on spiral CT. All ureteral stones were equally detected with both techniques. The num¬ber of respiratory motion artifacts and differential absorbtion artifacts were significantly lower on spiral CT than on convertional CT[(p< 0.005) and (p= 0.005) respectively]. The results of our study suggest that spiral CT may be more advantageous than conventional CT in the demonstration of urinary system stones

Üriner sistem taşlarının görüntülenmesinde spiral BT ve konvansiyonel BT'yi karşılaştırmak amacıyla renal ve/veya üreteral taş¬ları olan 41 hasta her iki teknikle incelendi. Spiral BT ile konvansiyonel BT'de görülmeyen 36 küçük ve 3 büyük renal taş saptan¬dı. Spiral BT ile görülen küçük renal taşların sayısı konvansiyonel BTye göre anlamlı olarak fazla bulundu (p
