Abstract
The Catholic and Orthodox churches mutually excommunicated each other in 1054 due to various disagreements on theological issues, this decision was annulled in 1964. This means the start of a new dialogue process for both sides. Dialogue has continued with the Pope John Paul II. to come to Turkey in November 1979. To further the reunification efforts of the Roman Catholic Church and Orthodox churches in the East, attend the ceremony to be held in Istanbul in honor of Saint Andrew and fulfill an ecumenical mission was the purpose of the pope's visit to Turkey. The period from the arrival of the Pope John Paul II. to his return has been followed intensely by both Turkish and foreign media. For example, air route the Pope took on his way to Turkey has been the subject of controversy. The most important issue of discussion was whether the pope would pray by kneeling in Hagia Sophia like Pope Paul VI. who visited Turkey in 1967. The Pope's visit coincided with a period of intense terrorist incidents in Turkey and so extraordinary security measures were taken to protect the pope. The Pope has been in crowds during his visits to other countries. In Turkey, he was kept out of sight as much as possible in case of an assassination. Such that, nobody could approach the pope, which was interpreted in the foreign press as Turkish people did not show affection for the pope. In his public speeches in Ankara, İstanbul and İzmir, the Pope stated that he was worried about religious fanaticism and emphasized that Islam was a monotheist religion, that Muslims recognized Jesus as a prophet and respected Mary. Emphasizing that Christianity, Islam and Judaism believed in one God, the Pope actually spoke of interfaith dialogue with these statements. Thanks to the measures taken against the threats of terrorist attacks, which were criticized as extreme, there was no setback during the visit. At the end of his visit, the Pope stated that he left Turkey happy and satisfied.
