An Alternative View of Feudal Society: Types

Abstract

This work is the product of thinking how social types can be used in the sense of society. Society cannot be explained independently from the human beings who make it up. The idea of social types is important because it provides and alternative perspective for understanding individuals in the context of the society they live in. In this paper, Feudal Europe is chosen for the purpose of an analysis of social types. Feudal European society is mainly composed of three social strata, which in turn can be understood as social types: the nobility, clergy and the serfdom. The study also focuses on the merchant category as an intermediary social type. Because, merchants in feudal society had a special position that allowed them interact with all other social types. Therefore, the merchants are crucial in understanding the feudal society. An analysis of feudal society based on these four categories of social types reveals that the feudal European society was shaped by relations of security, production, allegiance and trade.

Özet

Bu çalışma sosyal tiplerin toplumu anlamada nasıl kullanılabileceği düşüncesinin ürünüdür. Toplum kendisini oluşturan insanlar olmadan anlaşılamaz bir bütündür. Bu çerçevede sosyal tip düşüncesi topluma dair sağladığı alternatif bakış açıları nedeniyle önemlidir. Belirtilenler neticesinde Feodal Avrupa, çalışmadaki sosyal tiplerin analiz alanı olarak seçilmiştir. Feodal Avrupa, toplumsal tip olarak da ifade edilebilecek başlıca üç toplumsal tabakadan oluşmuştur. Bunlar; Soylular, Din Adamları ve Serflerdir. Ancak çalışma aynı zamanda tacir olarak adlandırılan ek bir sosyal tip üzerinde daha durmaktadır. Çünkü tacir feodal toplum içerisinde diğer tiplerle girdiği etkileşim dolayısıyla ayrıcalıklı bir konumdadır. Bu yüzden Feodal toplumu anlamak için tacir önemli bir noktadadır. Bu çerçevede dört sosyal tip üzerinden incelenen Feodal Avrupa toplumu güvenlik ilişkileri, üretim, tabiiyet ve ticaret üzerinden şekillenmiştir.
