Sparing Space for Weed: On Traditional Medicine and Patient-Physician Relationship

Abstract

AimThis study aimed to determine an appropriate approach in the patient–doctor relationship to methods of traditional medicine whose potential benefits and harms have not been investigated adequately.Materials and MethodsThe general tendency toward traditional medical methods in Turkey and the world, herbal treatments’ possible consequential interactions with clinical treatments, and the average patient’s attitude toward traditional medicine were investigated and discussed to arrive at reasonable conclusions.ResultsThere has been increasingly widespread use of traditional medical methods in Turkey and the world. Given the fact that the people, mass media, and private sector lean toward using these methods, it does not seem to be an easily irreversible trend. Physicians’ relevant knowledge and awareness, however, appear to be inadequate.Discussion and ConclusionThis trend may affect public health negatively. Because it poses a multifaceted problem, a circumspect strategy of solution is needed. Solution of such structural problems may require prolonged efforts; however, a constructive physician attitude can help ameliorate the situation as a practical solution.

Amaç Bu çalışmada hasta–hekim ilişkisinde potansiyel fayda ve zararları yeterince araştırılmamış olan geleneksel tıp metotlarına karşı uygun bir yaklaşım belirlemek amaçlanmıştır.Gereç ve Yöntemler Türkiye’de ve dünyada geleneksel tıp metotlarına olan genel yönelim, bitkisel tedavilerin klinik tedavilerle etkileşimi ve bunun muhtemel sonuçları ile ortalama hastanın bu konudaki tavrı incelenip tartışılarak mantıki sonuçlara varılmıştır.BulgularDünyada ve Türkiye’de geleneksel tıp metotlarının kullanımı giderek yaygınlaşmaktadır. Halkın, medyanın ve özel sektörün bu metotların kullanımına sıcak baktığı gerçeği göz önüne alındığında bu tersine çevrilebilir bir süreç gibi görünmemektedir. Hekimler ise konu hakkında yeterince bilgi ve farkındalık sahibi değildir.Tartışma ve SonuçBu gidişat halk sağlığını olumsuz etkileyebilir. Sorun çok yönlü olduğu için, çok yönlü bir çözüm stratejisine ihtiyaç vardır. Bu gibi yapısal sorunların çözümü uzun zaman alabilir; ancak hekimlerin konuya yapıcı yaklaşması pratik bir çözüm olarak durumu iyiye götürebilir.
