Abstract
The 2003 Iraq War had a dramatic impact on the Shi’a of the Middle East, leading to the argument of a Shia Arc enveloping the region. One of the most significant events resulting from the conflict has been the reemergence of Iraq, poised to return as a focus of the Shia, challenging the monopoly held by the Islamic Republic of Iran. Rather than a Shi’a Arc, this article argues that Iraq and Iran will emerge as two competing centres of Shi’a power, which will be felt not just among the Iraqi and Iranian Shi’a, but also among its other adherents.
