Abstract
This study was performed to determine the effects of gender on the histological structure of rat mandibular cartilage. A total of 10 mature Wistar albino rats were divided into male and female groups comprising 5 animals each. Following the sacrification of male and female rats by Ketamin HCl anaesthesia, they were investigated by using histological and histomorphological procedures. Total thicknesses of the mandibular condyle cartilage of males and females were 86.05 and 138.58 μm, respectively. Among the cartilage layers, the thickness of proliferative, chondrogenic and hypertrophic zones were significantly different between the genders. As a result, the thickness of mandibular condyle cartilage of female rats was significantly higher than that of males.
