HISTORICAL ACCURACY IN THE TREASURE OF ULUGBEK NOVEL

Abstract

Odil Yoqubov is one of the prominent authors of 20th century Uzbek literature. The historical novel called Treasure of Ulugbek is the most successful among all of his works. The novel describes the scientific activities of Ulugbek and Ali Qushchi. The publication of a novel on such topic during the Soviet era is viewed as a big accomplishment of the author. Allowing this publication during such era, however, makes one think the author could have made concessions on historical accuracy. This article attempts to explore the level of historical accuracy in the novel by examining the historical elements (people, places, and events) and comparing them with historical sources describing the same period. As a result, the author's message to the reader is exposed in addition to his devotion to historical accuracy.

Özet

Adil Yakuboğlu, 20. yüzyıl Özbek edebiyatının önde gelen yazarlarından biridir. Bütün romanları içinde en başarılı olanı Uluğbey'in Hazinesi adlı bu tarihî romandır. Romanda Uluğ Bey ve Ali Kuşçu'nun bilimsel faaliyetleri anlatılmaktadır. Romanın Sovyetler Birliği döneminde yayımlanmış olması yazar için büyük bir başarı olarak kabul edilmektedir. Romanın böyle bir dönemde yayımlanmasına izin verilmesi, yazarın tarihî gerçeklikten ödün vermiş olabileceğini makalede romandaki tarihî unsurlar (kişiler, yerler, olaylar) tespit edilerek, aynı dönemi anlatan tarihî kaynaklarla mukayese edilmiş; romandaki tarihî gerçeklik düzeyi ortaya çıkarılmaya çalışılmıştır. Böylece yazarın tarihî okuyucuya vermiş olduğu mesaj gözler önüne serilmiştir.
