The value of mammography in the differentiation between benign and malignant breast lesions

Abstract

Objective: A study was performed to determine the value of mammography in differentiation between benign and malignant breast lesions. The results were compared with data in the literature. Materials and Methods: We examined 52 women patients with these breast disease using this modality. The solid lesions were characterised as benign or malignant on the basis of their mammographic appearances. Histology was obtained in all cases. Results: Of 52 women patients studied with mammography when appropriate, 21 received a diagnosis of probably malignant lesions. The histological diagnosis was benign in 31 cases and malignant 21 cases. Mammography gave an overall sensitivity of 76%, specificity of 84%, positive predictive value of 76%, negative predictive value of 84%, and accuracy of 81% for the diagnosis of breast malignancy. Conclusion: We concluded that this modality helped to differentiate between benign and malignant breast lesions.

Amaç: Çalışma, benign ve malign meme lezyonlarının ayırımında mamografinm yerini belirlemek için yapıldı. Sonuçlar literatür bilgileriyle birlikte değerlendirildi. Gereç ve Yöntemler: Meme hastalığı olan 52 kadın hasta bu modalite ile incelendi. Lezyonlar mamografik görünümlerine göre benign veya malign olarak değerlendirildi. Bütün olgularda patolojik tanı elde edildi. Bulgular: İncelemeye alınan 52 hastanın mamografiyle 21'i malignensi görünümü vermekteydi. Patolojik tanı 31 olguda benign, 21 olguda maligndi: Meme malignitesinin tespitinde mamografinin sensitivitesi % 76,' spesifisitesi % 84, pozitif tahmin değeri % 76, negatif, tahmin değeri % 84 ve doğruluk oram % 81 olarak belirlendi.
