Abstract

Reification of Persons and Commodification of Culture Abstract: Economical, social and technological developments in the 20th century affected almost every segment of society and brought along radical changes in every field. This process which caught the attention of the intellectuals also took the attention of the Frankfurt school which determined the aim of establishment as information and understanding of social life from (Slater, 1998: 16). The Frankfurt school which aims to deal with social structure carried out studies on analysis of this structure, determining the missing and failing points and creating a social atmosphere in higher and better standards. In these studies conducted with critical theory, concern about individual and scoiety has always generated the main emphasis. This emphasis provided foundation for constituting and developing the culture industry in the school. This study, which aims the approach of the Frankfurt School toward individual and society, determined the conceptual framework with critical theory and culture industry and suggested perspectives of the school on individual and society particularly through criticism of culture industry. For this reason, literature review was used in this study.

Özet: 20. yüzyılda yaşanan ekonomik, sosyal ve teknolojik gelişmeler toplumsal hayatın hemen her alanını etkisi altına almış ve her alanda köklü birtakım değişiklikleri beraberinde getirmiştir. Dönemin birçok entelektüelinin de dikkatini çeken bu süreç, kuruluş amacını ekonomik temelden kurumsal ve düşünsel üstyapıya kadar, bütünselliği içinde toplumsal yaşamın bilgisi ve kavranması(Slater,1998:16) olarak belirleyen Frankfurt Okulunun da dikkatinden kaçmamıştır. Bir bütün olarak toplumsal yapıyı dert edinen Frankfurt Okulu, bu yapının analizinin yapılması, eksik ve aksayan yönlerinin belirlenmesi, daha iyi ve daha yüksek standartlarda bir toplumsal orta- mın sağlanması yönünde çalışmalar ortaya koymuştur. Eleştirel teori yöntemiyle ortaya konan bu ça- lışmalarda birey ve topluma yönelik kaygı her zaman temel vurguyu oluşturmuştur. Bu vurgu, Okulun kültür endüstrisi kavramını ortaya atmasına ve geliştirmesine de dayanak sağlamıştır. Frankfurt Okulunun birey ve toplum kavramlarına yaklaşımını konu alan bu çalışmada, Frank- furt Okulu, eleştirel teori ve kültür endüstrisi kavramlarıyla çalışmanın kavramsal çerçevesi belirlen- miş; özellikle kültür endüstrisi eleştirisi üzerinden okulun birey ve toplumla ilgili bakış açıları ortaya konmuştur.
