Abstract
This study has been conducted in order to determine the reasons, the results and the treatment of high fever and the factors which affect the applications of the mothers having children whose age groups range from 0 to 5. The data were collected by using a questionnaire with,22 open-ended and multiple-choice items which examine mothers' social-demographic features and also the mothers'applications have been determined by using a thermometer guide following the questionary, a standard education was given to the mothers with an aim to teach the use of thermometer, medicine applications and child care with high fever. The data were collected out of 216 mothers with 0-5 aged children who came to the child care clinics in Mersin State Hospital and Mersin University Medical Faculty Hospital. As a result, 12% of mothers do not feel the need for decreasing the temperature of their children with high fever. 66.6 % define the harms of high fever as febrile convulsion and 8.9% state that they do not know what the situation is. 25.5 % of mothers do not know the alarming point related to high fever, 50.9 % define the temperature below 38.C as high fever. 43 % of mothers do not have thermometers at home. 65.9 % of mothers measure the fever by touching their children with hand, 14.5 % observe the general situation of children and 20.1 % use thermometers. 43 % of mothers claim that they do not know how to use a thermometer, 14.5 % of mothers who claim to know how to use a thermometer spend more time than needed for holding the thermometer on the measuring point while 21.3 % spend less time. As a result of statistical analysis, a meaningful relation has been found out between the age and education levels of mothers and their information and applications related to high fever. Consequently, it has been observed that mothers consider high fever dangerous. However, their information and applications related to high fever are either inefficient of wrong.
