Abstract

Neural tube defects (NTDs) are among the most common and serious birth defects. The etiology of neural tube defects are multifactorial, with both enviromental and genetic factors influencing outcome. Folic acid intake is the predominant enviromental factor that has been associated with neural tube defects. The effect of folic acid in primary prevention of neural tube defects are the most important Prevention of neural tube defects are very important for promoting family health and well being. Pediatric nurses, through their contacts with children and their families, have many oppurtunities to interact with women of childbearing age and they can play a major role in the prevention neural tube defects. Therefore, understanding of the pathogenesis of neural tube defects is essential in framing interventions and practice.
