Abstract

The 14th century is an era when many uprisings took place against the Mongol rule. The Sarbadar movement, which emerged as a Shia-based national movement in Khorasan, is one of them and it created a tremendous impression around the world. The ruthless and unethical attitudes of the Mongol rulers against the public, the heavy tax burden and the tyranny and injustice imposed during the collection of these taxes brought the public to the edge of a riot. They were locking themselves in their houses on the sight of Mongol tax collectors. Due to the climbing adversities about the Mongol rule, the Sarbadars emerged as a revolutionary public commotion in Khorasan. This movement had also extensions outside the Iranian land, and one of them was the Sarbadar movement that occurred in Samarkand. In this context, the Samarkand Sarbadar movement that rose under the leadership of a man named Mawlana-Zadeh against the Mongol rule, and the movement’s sphere of influence constitute the main subject of the article.
