Investigation of efficacy on debris and smear layer on root canal walls prepared by Profile .04 instrument: A SEM study

Abstract

The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of root canal wall debridement and smear layer following hand and Profile .04 instrumentation. The first group of 12 root canals of premolar teeth was prepared using manual Hedström files. The second group of 12 root canals was instrumented using the Profile .04 system. In both groups, irrigation was performed using a 2.5% NaOCI solution. The canal walls were observed under a scanning electron microscope and the coronal, middle and apical thirds of each canal photographed at different magnifications. Resulting scores recorded and tested statistically. Under the conditions of this study there were no significant differences between Profile .04 and manual instrumentation on the efficacy of root canal debridement and smear layer. As a result, none of groups used in this study completely removed smear layer.

Özet

Çalışmamızın amacı elle ve Profile .04 cihazı ile preparasyonun kök kanallarındaki debris ve smear tabakasını temizleme etkinliğinin incelenmesidir. Çalışmamızda yeni çekilmiş 12 adet premolar dişlerin kök kanalları 1.grupta elle Hedström eğeler ile, 2.gruptaki 12 adet diş ise Profile .04 cihazı ile prepare edildiler. Her iki grupta da preparasyon işlemi esnasında irrigasyon solüsyonu olarak %2.5 lik NaOCI kullanıldı. Daha sonra her bir örneğin koronal, orta ve apikal kanal duvarları debris ve smear tabakasının varlığı yönünden scanning elektron mikroskopla incelendi ve örneklerden çeşitli büyütmede fotoğraflar alındı. Elde edilen skorlar istatistiksel olarak değerlendirildi. Bu çalışmanın sonunda, kök kanallarının elle veya Profile .04 cihazı ile preparasyonu sonucunda her iki grup arasında debris ve smear tabakasını temizleme etkinliği açısından bir fark olmadığı saptandı. Sonuç olarak, hem elle hem de Profile .04 cihazı ile preparasyon kök kanallarını temizlemede yetersiz kaldılar.
