Relationship among hypertrophy of inferior turbinate, deviation of nasal septum and antral retention cyst

Abstract
Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate whether or not the relationship among hypertrophy of inferior turbinate, deviation of nasal septum and antral retention cyst using dental computerized tomography (DVT). Material and methods: On the coronal images obtained by using DVT, the presence of the hypertrophy of inferior turbinate, the deviation of nasal septum and antral retention cyst was explored. The correlation between these variables was assessed. Results: DVT examination performed on 400 maxillary sinus, the prevalence of antral septa was seen in 20.1 %, the prevalence of the hypertrophy of inferior turbinate was seen in 48,6 % and the prevalence of the deviation of nasal septum was seen in 74,8%. It was found that there was no correlation among hypertrophy of inferior turbinate, deviation of nasal septum and antral retention cyst (P > 0.05). Conclusion: It must be taken into consideration that there is no relation among the hypertrophy of inferior turbinate, the deviation of nasal septum and antral retention cyst during pre-surgical planning. Also, DVT is a useful imaging technique in detection of these variations.
Özet
Amaç: Bu çalısmanın amacı alt konka hipertrofisi, nazal septum deviasyonu ve antral retansiyon kisti arasında iliski olup olmadıgını dental volümetrik tomografi (DVT) ile arastırmaktır. Gereç ve Yöntem: DVT taramaları sonucu elde edilen koronal görüntülerde alt konka hipertrofisi, nazal septum deviasyonu ve antral retansiyon kist varlıgı arastırıldı. Bu degiskenler arasındaki korelasyon hesaplandı. Bulgular: Alt konka hipertrofisi, nazal septum deviasyonu ve antral retansiyon kisti arasında iliski tespit edilemedi (P>0.05). Sonuç: Cerrahi öncesi planlamada alt konka hipertrofisi, nazal septum deviasyonu ve antral retansiyon kisti arasında iliski olmadıgı dikkate alınmalıdır. Ayrıca bu varyasyonların tespitinde DVT faydalı bir görüntüleme teknigidir.
