Midline space, caused by mesiodens, closure in the mixed dentition (A case report)

Abstract

Supernumerary teeth are relatively common in the oral cavity and are characterized by an excessive number of teeth. The term "mesiodens" refers to a supernumerary tooth located in the midline of the maxilla between the central incisors. A mesiodens is often diagnosed coincidentally during a radiological examination. However, a mesiodens may also be diagnosed in relation to a clinically identified central diastema and an eruption disturbance, or a rotation of a central incisor. Early diagnosis minimizes treatment needs and prevents associated complications. This case shows orthodontic treatment of a 9 year old patient after extraction of the mesiodens. This treatment produced satisfactory results in terms of both esthetics and function.

Özet

Sürnumerer dişler oral kavitede oldukça sık görülen artı dişlerdir. Üst çene iki keser diş arasında görülen artı dişlere ‘mesiodens’dişler denir. Mesiodensler radyografik olarak teşhis edilebildiği gibi, klinik olarak santral kesici dişler arasında diastemaya, dişlerde sürme geçikmesine ve rotasyonlara neden olmalarından da teşhis edilebilir. Erken tanısı ve tedavisi ileri dönemdeki komplikasyonları önlemek ve tedavi süresini kısaltmak açısından çok önemlidir. Bu olgu sunumunda 9 yaşındaki hastanın mesiodens dişi çekildikten sonra uygulanan sabit ortodontik tedavisi sunulmuştur. Bu tedavi sonucunda hem estetik hem de fonksiyonel olarak tatmin edici sonuç elde edilmiştir.
