Yusuf Akçura and Ziya Gökalp

Abstract

Ziya Gökalp and Yusuf Akçura made important intellectual contributions to the statesmen and intellectuals on sociological, philosophical, financial, historical issues, and etc. during the Constitutional monarchy and the Republic. Among the issues these two well-known thinkers dealt with in the magazine "Türk Yurdu", "Turkism and nationalism" were the most dominant ones. Under the political conditions of their time, their thoughts were sometimes appreciated, but from time to time subjected to extreme criticisms. Atatürk, while benefiting from the ideas of Ziya Gökalp and Yusuf Akçura, did not completely adopt the intellectual principles of these estimable characters; and made a synthesis unifying the thoughts of Western intellectuals and the realities of the Republic of Turkey.
